Nikkei: The Condominium Management Association revealed survey results that 80.5% nationwide building management associations are banning minpaku, or short term rentals. Condominiums that allowed short term rentals are at a paltry 0.3%. Approximately 20% of condominiums did not respond to the survey.
Minpaku laws will come into force on 15th June 2018, allowing only up to 180 days for private short term rentals. Local governments will however have the authority to impose stricter regulations. Registration with local governments for brokerage companies and property managers begins on March 15, but the concerns about the deterioration of the living environment due to the residents of condominiums is clear.
44.6% of the ban are imposed by management associations, while 35.9% are banned by General Assembly and Board of Directors of unions.
The survey was conducted by 365 companies affiliated with the association. As of February 4, 87,372 unions responded, which accounts for more than 90% of the condominium management associations.
